Madrue McMurray Thorn, 89, of Red Bay passed away Thursday, Aug. 5, 2010 at her residence. She was born April 16, 1921 in Franklin County, to James Clayton and Flora Mae Thorn McMurray. She was a member of Allsboro Cumberland Presbyterian Church. She attended Florence State Teachers College and taught school for a short time. After a long career at Blue Bell, she retired to the family farm with her husband. She was a member of the Alabama Lady Cattlemen’s Association. She was a devoted wife and mother and enjoyed vacation travels throughout the country with her family.
Funeral services were held Aug. 9, 2010 at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. J.B. Burns and Bro. Roger Wood officiating. Burial was in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Red Bay.
She is survived by one daughter, Patricia Gail Strickland and husband, John B., Jr., of Red Bay; one son, James H. “Jim” Thorn and wife, Glenda, of Muscle Shoals; four grandchildren, John David Strickland and wife, Malynda, Michelle Strickland Hester and husband, Terry, Michael Andrew Strickland and wife, Renee, and Mallory Deshea Thorn; five great-grandchildren, Austin Strickland, Ethan Strickland, Dale Hester, Laken Hester and Emma Strickland; one nephew, Mike McMurray and wife, Beth, of Ervin, Texas; two great-nephews, Griff McMurray and Clayton McMurray; and one great-niece, Katie McMurray.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Thorn; her parents; and brother, James Columbus “J.C.” McMurray.
Pallbearers were Junior Strickland, Michael Strickland, John David Strickland, Terry Hester, Malcom Waldrep and Dexter Waldrep.
