Church hosts hunter’s banquet

Calvary Baptist Church in Russellville will host a sportsman’s banquet Thursday for its third consecutive year.
The banquet is usually geared towards outdoor sports. This year’s event will host hunting, but is open to anyone who would like to attend.
Calvary pastor Dr. Wade Wallace said the event has been successful in previous years.
This year’s speaker will be Sammy Gilbreath of Birmingham. Gilbreath is currently battling a heart condition and has decided to set out on a quest to hunt as many things as possible before his heart gives out. He has hunted all types of animals including bear, deer, elk and has completed what hunters refer to as a grand slam, which means he has shot four of four different types of turkey.
Calvary deacon Brian Pace said the event serves as a way type of fellowship. “The main reason for the banquet is to show people that they can be hunters and church goers too. We do not wish to force anything on anyone, but we would just like to bring the hunters in and fellowship with them.”
Pace said several local businesses have donated gifts that will be given away at the event. There will be door prizes available, several taxidermists will be on-hand to give out free deer mounts and a grand prize winner will be chosen to receive one free deer hunt at Hurricane Creek in Franklin County. Tickets for the event are $10 and will be sold the night of the banquet. Proceeds will go towards food, door prizes and the rest will be donated to Quinn’s Ranch boys’ home in Red Bay.
