PC holds off rally from Lady Wildcats

BELGREEN – Brooke Daniel's desperation 3-pointer from near mid court hit the rim at the final buzzer, but did not go through the net as Phil Campbell eighth-grade girls team beat Tharptown 12-10 to open the Franklin County Junior High Basketball Tournament.
The fifth-seeded Lady Bobcats led 6-3 by the end of the first quarter, but fourth-seeded Tharptown scored the only two points of the second quarter to cut the deficit to 6-5 by halftime.
Phil Campbell scored a pair of quick baskets to start the third, but Tharptown rallied to pull within one point late in the fourth.
Phil Campbell hit two free throws down the stretch to take a 12-9 lead before Tharptown scored a free throw to pull within two points to set up Daniel's last-second shot.
With the win Phil Campbell advances to the semifinals. The Lady Bobcats will play top-seeded Red Bay Saturday at 11 a.m. at Belgreen High School
Phil Campbell's Vickie McAlister led all scorers with seven points while Kaylie Ayers added four points and Courtney Nix scored one point for the Lady Bobcats.
Daniel and Savannah Robinson scored four points each to lead Tharptown while Kathy Alfaro scored two points.
