Vina QB earns Player of the Week honors

VINA – Last season Vina quarterback Brent Townsend watched as Shoals Christian defeated his Red Devils 43-22.
Friday night, Townsend helped the Red Devils get their revenge in a 22-13 upset victory over the Flame, which was ranked ninth in the Class 1A preseason poll.
"I am really pleased with the way he played," said Vina Coach Bill Smith. "He has improved since we started and he had a good jamboree."
During the win, Townsend accounted for 192 total yards. He completed four passes for 124 yards and a pair of touchdowns and he rushed for 68 yards on 13 carries.
Though he had a strong game, it was not perfect – he threw one interception. The interception was probably the last thing on his mind as the time ticked off the clock Friday night.
"It was great," Townsend said. "I don't ever remember beating a ranked team."
Townsend was quick to give the credit for his impressive night to his teammates.
"(Cass White and Morgan McCarley) made good catches because they were not perfect passes," Townsend said.
With the win Vina improved to 1-0 in Class 1A, Region 8. The Red Devils will travel to Mount Hope this week for another region game.
