A Russellville native is playing host to one of the South's most noted authors.
Jennifer Norris Hunt, a Russellville native who now lives in Birmingham, will host Kathryn Tucker Windham at her art gallery on August 8.
The Jennifer Hunt Gallery will include an exhibit of Tucker's work from August 8 through September 20.
"Mrs. Windham is recognized for many talents, including her books," said Hunt, whose parents are Lanny and Donna Norris, of Russellville.
"I first learned of her while I was in fourth grade in Mrs. Bishop's class at College Avenue. We read 13 Alabama Ghosts and Jeffrey, which Mrs. Windham wrote in 1969."
Windham is a renowned story teller, award winning journalist and photographer. She is also known as a popular author and playwright.
The photographs on display at the Jennifer Hunt Gallery span eight decades of American history.
She grew up in Thomasville where she began her career at the Thomasville Times. She later worked at the Birmingham News and The Selma Times-Journal where she won several Associated Press awards for her writing and photography.
She authored her first book, Treasured Alabama Recipes, in 1966. Her second book, 13 Alabama Ghosts and Jeffrey, was published three years later and has been popular in Alabama schools since.
"My first exposure to this remarkable lady was in Russellville," Hunt said.
"She is now 90 years old and still making many public appearances, one of them being at the gallery when her exhibit opens."
The gallery will host the exhibit for more than a month. The public will have the opportunity to meet Windham from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 8. There will be a book signing from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
The Jennifer Hunt Gallery is located at 2800 Cahaba Village Plaza, Suite 260, in Birmingham. For more information, call 205-972-3232.
