Grissom certified as city

With more than a month remaining until the municipal elections throughout the county, one city council seat has been filled.
David Reed Grissom was presented with a certificate of election Monday night after being the only candidate to qualify for the District 5 council seat.
City officials said it is unclear when the last time a political newcomer faced no opposition.
"It's an honor knowing that I will be able to work with the mayor and city council to help the people of District 5 and the city of Russellville," said Grissom, who is a 1990 Russellville High School graduate and 1994 graduate of the University of North Alabama.
Grissom will take office with the rest of the city council on Nov. 3.
"I look forward to moving our city forward," said Grissom, a local business owner and lifetime member of Russellville Masonic Lodge 371.
"Providing good paying jobs, a quality education for our children and improved city services will always be top priorities."
Grissom, the son of the late Bob Grissom and Judy Grissom, said he looks at the opportunity to serve on the council as a duty that will allow him to help the town he loves.
"Russellville is a great place and is filled with great people," he said.
"There are some areas we need to work on and that's what I want to do.
"I want this to be the best possible place for my little girl (Kate) and other children in Russellville to grow up in.
"I want to thank the people of District 5 for allowing me to be their representative on the city council.
"I look forward to moving our district and the entire city forward."
