BIRMINGHAM – Russellville native Christine Kelly has achieved world champion status in taekwondo after recently winning two medals at the Ho-Am Tiger-Rock state championships.
Kelly competed in four events, including sword sparring, point sparring, traditional forms and free-design forms.
She won the gold medal in the free-design forms and the sliver in traditional forms and swords competition, which went to sudden death. Kelly also finished third in sparring.
By winning gold and silver in traditional and free-designs forms, she was declared state champion in both events.
Points for medals are also awarded and added to the year's total, which determines national ranking. Fifteen points are awarded for first place, 10 for second and five for third, and these points are added up in each event for three tournaments during the year, the state tournament and two national tournaments.
Heading into the final national competition, Kelly is the world champion in traditional forms, sparring and free-design.
She will compete again in October at the national tournament in Chattanooga, Tenn.
