City to put in new red lights

By the end of the summer, there won't be any excuse left for running a red light in the city of Russellville.
The city council voted Monday night to replace the incandescent bulbs in the majority of the city's stoplights with LED bulbs, which essentially burn twice as bright.
Aside from the increased illumination, Councilman Craig Grissom said the bulbs use 80-percent less energy than the standard bulbs and last up to 10 times longer.
"We have to send crews out to change the incandescent bulbs about once a year," he said. "The bulbs only cost a few dollars but what gets you is the labor cost to do it. The payback on these bulbs is about a year in what they'll save us."
Grissom said the LED bulbs are warranted for seven years and most last for up to 10 years.
"Really, once you put them up there, you don't have to worry with it for a long time," he said.
The new lights will be installed along U.S. 43, Waterloo Road, Jackson Ave. and Underwood Road, totaling about 170 lights.
