After months of planning, the brand-new Russellville American Legion team hit the field Thursday afternoon for its first official workout.
Post 64, coached by former Muscle Shoals and West Georgia pitcher Wes Todd and current Northwest-Shoals pitcher Rusty Todd, practiced for two hours at the Russellville High School field.
Tryouts were held May 17, and the tentative roster includes players from Russellville, Sheffield and Phil Campbell. The team, which is still seeking a major sponsor and individual sponsors to defray expenses, will feature burnt orange-and-white uniforms and caps.
Russellville's John Batchelor and Jake Ward, who both played for district champion Post 33 last summer and are the only players with previous American Legion experience, are joined on the Post 64 roster by Matthew Duncan, Jonas Boyles, Hayden Crane, Seth Rhudy, Trent Brannon, T.J. Lindsey, Dillion Boston, Brady Gregroy, Michael Milton, Thomas Lindsey , Caleb Thompson and Casey Herring.
Post 64 will open its season Monday at Athens at 6 p.m.
