FORD CITY – The Red Bay boys golf team shot a 345 on the Schoolmaster course at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at the Shoals to claim sixth place after the first round of the Class 1A-2A state tournament Monday.
Only three golfers in the 35-player field managed to shoot under par as Shoals Christian's Ben Wood and Michael Peter and White Plains' Jaren Humphrey tied for first after the first day with a 1-under-71.
Shoals Christian shot a 295 to lead the team standings, while Bayside Academy was second with a 308 and Houston Academy was third with 345.
Red Bay senior Grant Fancher, who won the sectional championship and finished second at the sub-state tournament, had three birdies, including a 4-under-5 on the tough No. 4 hole, and carded 11 pars to fire a team-best 3-under-75 to tie for sixth overall with Michael Zierdt.
The Tigers' Derrick Miller birdied at No. 9 and made par on seven of nine holes on the back nine to finish with an 89, while teammate Adam Seahorn had par at the No. 1, 7, 10 and 12 holes to tie with Miller for 27th place. Justin Page and Casey Keeton rounded out the five-player Red Bay squad with three pars apiece from Page (92) and Keeton (103).
