MUSCLE SHOALS – Vina defeated Shoals Christian for the third time this season as the Lady Red Devils won 11-10 to stay alive in the double-elimination Class 1A, Area 16 tournament Monday at the Muscle Shoals Sports Complex.
Shoals Christian (0-21) took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning but Vina (6-15) responded with two runs in the bottom of the third as Claudia Townsend and Emily Davidson each scored.
The Lady Red Devils capitalized on two errors, two hit batsmen and four walks to score seven runs to take a 9-1 lead in the fourth. Stormi Mitchell, Dannie Leigh Ozbirn, Townsend, Jesse Norwood, Karmen Solomon, Victoria Cochran and Kim Clack all scored for Vina.
The Lady Flame pushed across two runs in the fifth and three runs in the sixth to cut the deficit to 10-6 but Vina added another run in the bottom of the sixth when Townsend reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and scored on an RBI-groundout by Davidson.
Shoals Christian threatened in the top of the seventh with four runs but Norwood, who struck out eight and walked seven and added a single and triple at the plate, fanned Erin Fielder and Kelsey Davis and forced Taelon Hopwood to ground out to Stormi Mitchell at second base to end a bases-loaded jam.
Townsend, Davidson, Solomon and Cochran each had an RBI for the Lady Red Devils.
Vina advanced to play Belgreen Tuesday in a rematch of the opening game of the tournament, which the Lady Bulldogs won 10-0.
