Locals make All-Star squad

MONTGOMERY – Two local players have been selected to play in the 12th annual Alabama North-South All-Star Game in Huntsville July 14-18.
Russellville defensive back Caleb Mitchell and Red Bay placekicker Pablo Makepeace were among those selected to play for the North squad, which will be coached by Briarwood Christian coach Fred Yancey.
Mitchell, who also returned kicks and played receiver, made 49 tackles and intercepted five passes and returned one for a touchdown for the Golden Tigers, who advanced to the second round of the Class 5A state playoffs and finished 10-2.
He also caught 22 passses for 527 yards and seven touchdowns and rushed 25 times for 264 yards and two scores.
Makepeace, who also lined up as a defensive back, receiver, running back and quarterback, made 51-of-56 extra point and 8-of-11 field goals with a long of 44 for the Tigers, who advanced to the Class 2A state semifinals, won the region championship and finished with a perfect regular-season record.
He also rushed for 536 yards and six touchdowns and had 483 yards receiving for six scores.
This event will include in-state all-star games in volleyball, girls and boys basketball, baseball, softball and soccer along with clinics and sessions for coaches, officials and athletic directors, a product exposition and other related activities. The football game will be played on the campus of Alabama A&M University.
