We trust that bio-solids are safe
By Staff
In the past several months much has been written and said about the use of biosolids as a viable source for fertilizer.
Most of it has been negative. We also feel those who have taken the negative stance have done so uninformed and uneducated.
Many of the reports cited vague statistics about "potential." Potential is an amazing thing but in most cases it is immeasurable.
The fact of the matter is, biosolids have been blessed by the Environmental
Protection Agency and is being used in many states across the country. It's
also being used in counties that surround ours.
It's been studied and studied again. There's very little evidence to support
claims that biosolids have a direct negative impact to the environment or
water quality.
Biosolids, or processed and treated human waste, is a little gross to think
about but there's no reason to deny our farmers the use of this resource.
Farmers have been using livestock manure for many, many years. That's equally unpleasant to think about touching your vegetables.
If farmers are to survive all their options have to be laid before them.
Scientists agree this is a safe and viable option.
