Candidate qualifying ends soon

By Staff
Jerry Fancher
This June, Franklin County voters will begin the selection process for the following positions: Revenue Commissioner, Superintendent of Education, 3rd district School Board Member, and all four Franklin County Commission seats. Would you like to run for one of these positions?
The other positions are statewide posts and the qualifying process is handled at the state level.
Qualifying will end on April 4 at 5:00 PM for the Republican Primary. You may contact me at 256-810-1209 or fancherjd@yahoo.com for the necessary qualifing papers to run in the Republican Primary.
The Franklin Republican Executive Committee will meet on April 3, 2008 at p.m. The meeting will be held at the J. Foy Guin Building just north of the Courthouse. We will discuss plans for the upcoming election.
We need to elect officials with new ideas to lead Franklin County. When one party dominates a county, the control of the county is placed in the hands of a select few citizens.
For our government to function as our forefathers envisioned, we need the best citizens to hold these offices. Our government is a representative democracy, not a true democracy as we tend to call our governing system.
A true democracy would require that all of the citizens vote on each action that the governing bodies take.
Our government is a representative democracy, where we elect representatives to cast votes for us on the matters that come before that particular branch of government. Who is elected votes for you, therefore, you are entrusting that elected official to vote for you in all matters that come before that governing body.
When we were in school we were graded every six weeks, and at the end of the year we passed or failed. Now is the time that we grade our elected officials. You will have the opportunity to keep or remove the officials from office. Do not take this responsibility lightly. The future of our children depends on who we elect to represent us in Franklin County.
Make your voice count by voting for the most qualified candidates.
