R.A. Hubbard ends Lady Bulldogs' run

BELGREEN – The R.A. Hubbard girls advanced to the Northwest Regional tournament by using a late run to beat Class 1A, Area 16 champion Belgreen 57-46 on the road Thursday night.
Belgreen, which was playing for its first regional appearance since 2003, jumped out early with a 17-12 lead in the first quarter and led 24-23 at halftime but R.A. Hubbard tied the game at 31 heading into the fourth quarter.
In the final period the Lady Chiefs outscored Belgreen 26-15 as Chasity Puryear scored a game-high 22 points for R.A. Hubbard. Whitney Ashford added 13 and Alex Acosta finished with 10.
R.A. Hubbard will play Speake 6 p.m. Tuesday in Hanceville, and the regional winner will advance to the Class 1A Final Four in Birmingham Feb. 25-29.
Senior Monica Smith scored a team-high 14 points for Belgreen (21-8).
Deborah Billingham added 10 points, while Amber Smith had seven and Martha Billingham contributed six. Seniors Kellie Oliver (6), Keri Metcalf (3) and Candice Allen (2) also scored for the Lady Bulldogs.
