Belgreen wins area championship

BELGREEN – The Belgreen girls claimed the Class 1A, Area 16 championship Thursday night with a 59-40 victory over Covenant Christian.
Covenant Christian took a 16-9 lead in the first quarter but Belgreen responded with a flurry of 21 points to hold a 30-26 halftime advantage.
Belgreen (17-6) bore down defensively in the second half and held the Lady Eagles to only eight points in the third and six in the final period.
Amber Smith scored a team-high 13 points for the Lady Bulldogs, who will host the area tournament as the No. 1 seed. Martha Billingham finished with 10 points. while Deborah Billingham added eight.
Candice Allen (8), Monica Smith (6), Kellie Oliver (5), Amy Smith (4), Keri Metcalf (2), Loren McVicker (2) and Katy Britton (2) also scored for Belgreen.
Crystin Johnson paced Covenant Christian with a game-high 23 points.
Red Bay 67
Tharptown 33
RED BAY – The No. 5 Red Bay girls improved to 19-5 Thursday night with a 67-33 win over Tharptown.
Brittany Scott led Red Bay with 15 points, while Morgan Duncan had 12 and Chesley McWilliams added 10.
Hollie Hines scored a team-high 15 points for Tharptown, and Tosha George finished with six.

The Red Bay boys cruised past Tharptown 60-23 at home Thursday.
Red Bay led 33-17 at halftime and held the Wildcats to only six points in the second half.
Justin Page had 17 points, while Grant Fancher had 10 and Curtis Morrell added nine for the Tigers (7-14).
Devin Lawson scored a team-high six points for Tharptown, and Manny Ricardo and Joseph Parker both finished with four.
Covenant Christian 66
Belgreen 49
Covenant Christian beat Belgreen 66-49 in Class 1A, Area 16 action Thursday.
Collins Stutts scored 17 points for the Eagles, and Lee Williams added 14.
Kyle Warren had a team-high 14 points for Belgreen, while Shane Fretwell had 10 and Spencer Hargett added eight.
