Six local players named All-State

BIRMINGHAM – Six Franklin County players have been named to the Alabama Sports Writers Association's 2007 All-State football team.
Russellville tailback Mike Abernathy and Red Bay running back Josh Senkbeil were both chosen as first-team selections.
Abernathy (6-0, 227) led the 10-2 Golden Tigers in rushing with 1,345 yards and 16 touchdowns, while the Tigers' Senkbeil (6-1, 205) led the county with 1,760 yards and 28 total touchdowns.
Russellville offensive lineman Byron Bean, defensive back Caleb Mitchell and linebacker Kory Suggs were picked honorable mention in Class 5A, while Red Bay's Pablo Makepeace was listed as an honorable mention athlete in Class 2A.
Bean (6-0, 273) played on the defensive and offensive lines for Russellville and was the highest-rated lineman this season, while Suggs (6-3, 215) led the team with 12 sacks and 90 total tackles, including seven for a loss.
Russellville's Mitchell and Red Bay's Makepeace each started on offense, defense and special teams this season. Mitchell (6-1, 170) intercepted five passes and made 49 total tackles, while accounting for nine touchdowns on offense and returning kicks for the Golden Tigers. Makepeace (5-9, 170) scored 12 touchdowns for the 13-1 Tigers and converted 51-of-56 extra points and 8-of-11 field goals with a long of 44 yards.
