Fighting fires in East Franklin and the Blue Springs community will never be easier, but it may just get a little easier.
U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced Friday that the Department of Homeland Security will release $89,300 to the East Franklin Volunteer Fire Department. An additional $24,486 was awarded to the Blue Springs Volunteer Fire Department.
The funding is provided through the Assistance to Firefighters Grants Program.
"This essential funding will assist the East Franklin Volunteer Fire Department fund its operations and safety programs," said Shelby. "Our nation's firefighters are true first responders. This funding will ensure that they are adequately prepared for any event, should one occur."
The Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency awarded these funds as a part of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.
This program will distribute $490 million in direct federal assistance this year to fire departments and nonaffiliated emergency medical service organizations nationwide.
