NACOP to hold benefit golf tourney

By Staff

The North Alabama Chief of Police Association is working to raise money in order to purchase a memorial for a Florence police officer that died in the line of duty.
The tournament will be held at Joe Wheeler State Park in Rogersville Aug. 11 beginning at 7:30 a.m., association secretary Pat Creel said.
One hundred percent of the proceeds from the four-man scramble tournament will go to purchase a tombstone for David Young, an officer who died as a result of an accident while he was on duty.
"It's [buying the stone] one less expense his wife and family have," Creel said. "It's just the right thing to do."
The cost of the tournament is $55 per player, and lunch will be provided. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third places.
NACOP has received several donations to go toward the David Young fund including a $500 donation from the Red Bay Centennial Celebration Committee, Creel said.
He added that several individuals have made donations to the fund as well.
"We have collected about $1,300 for the fund already," Creel said.
The tournament is expected to be well attended by members of the law enforcement community and other community members who would like to attend the tournament.
"We usually have a good turnout at charity events," Creel said.
In addition to the golf event, NACOP is offering a chance for individuals to win a M4 Bushmaster rifle. A $2 donation gets one entry, and $10 gets six entries.
"The rifle will be given away at the state chief's association in August," Creel said. "And, you don't have to present to win."
