Gettin' down on the farm

By Staff
Melissa Cason, Franklin County Times
The county's second graders spent the day at a farm this past Friday,, but not just any farm. The students were transported back into time so to speak as they learned about the way of life 100 years ago.
The students got to learn tons of new and interesting things while on the farm, from seeing how honey is made from bees to trying their hand at milking a cow.
It is safe to say that this was a one of a kind experience for these students. The Franklin County Chamber of Commerce, Bear Creek Development Authority, the City of Red Bay, Community Education and Johnny Mack Morrow presented Farm Day.
The kids seemed to be really enjoying their day on the farm. It was an experience like no other, and one that can't be found in a classroom.
I love that our educators are taking an active approach to education. To show a student something makes it real to them, which helps them learn it.
I can't say we did a lot of fun things like farm day when I was growing up, but I remember one class in particular. My 10th grade world history teacher gave us a class project to talk about an invention.
My group was given the task of telling about Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone. I wrote a skit and gave our group parts. We dressed up in costumes and everything for the project.
We got an A-plus for our trouble. While the project was a lot of work, I don't think I'll ever forget it.
Farm Day is that project for these kids. They will never forget trying to milk a cow, and seeing the ways of the past because it's important to know where you have been to find out where you are going.
Kudos for all those involved. You did a great job. I hope that Farm Day becomes an annual event, and I hope that more schools get involved.
I know they would find it beneficial.
