Local VFW elects new officers

By Staff
Melissa Cason, Franklin County Times
Russellville's Veterans of Foreign War Lodge elected new officers during their monthly meeting last week, and are recruiting new members to breathe new life into the organization.
The new officers for the organization are Bill Jackson, commander; Barry Moore, quarter master; Danny Carter, senior vice commander; Hugh Plott, junior vice commander, and three trustees: William Beard, Harold Herring, and Troy Oliver.
"The VFW had a lot of older members from World War II who were not able to do things they were once able to do," Jackson said. "They did a great job keeping the organization going, but we need to be more active in the community."
The organization currently has 55 members, 30 of which are new members and are veterans from our nation's recent war in Iraq, Jackson said.
"All members must be a combat veteran of a war," Jackson said.
The first priority for the organization is to get the old VFW building back in shape so that meetings can be held in the basement.
"We hope to do some fundraising to get the building back into shape," Jackson said.
Once the building is refurbished, the second item on the agenda is to create scholarship funds for children of veterans. The organization also wants to assist with military funerals in our area.
"We'll need to get our membership up to get all this going," Jackson said, "but we've got a lot of things we want to do."
The Russellville's Lodge services the Franklin County area, and all veterans in the area are encouraged to join and get involved in the organization as a way to give back to the community and to support other veterans.
For more information on how to join the VFW, contact Quarter Master Moore at 331-9895.
