Area government offices and many local businesses will be closed tomorrow in observance of Veteran's Day.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of Veteran's Day, first celebrated in 1954. The day was first set aside as Armistice Day to mark the cessation of hostilities after World War I.
There will be no formal event in Franklin County to celebrate Veteran's Day. Franklin County Chamber of Commerce director Lisa Stockton said there were some logistical problems in attempting to get a speaker for the event.
Instead, Stockton said the Chamber is working on a large-scale ceremony to take place in the spring when the 115th Signal Battalion, Russellville's National Guard unit, returns home from Iraq.
Statewide, Gov. Bob Riley is encouraging employers throughout the state to allow their employees who served or are presenting serving in the military to wear their military uniforms today, which he proclaimed "Honor Our Military Day."
State employees will be allowed to wear their military uniforms to work on that day, he said.
Riley will be in Huntsville on Thursday to take part in a Veterans Day ceremony at the State Veterans Home.
