Local scouts honor founder with baby shower

What was the dream of a Georgia woman in 1912 is now one of the largest organizations for girls in the United States.
The Girl Scouts of the USA have been promoting the success of girls and their futures for over 90 years. To honor the founder of the organization, Juliette Gordon Low, Junior Troop 231 from Red Bay recently held a baby shower for the baby girl born closest to Low's birthday, which was Oct. 31.
The troop members have been working on their service project, trying to obtain their ultimate goal of receiving a bronze award, the highest honor they can receive.
The girls selected "donate baby gifts" as their service project and it required 15 hours of extra work during the summer.
The girls were responsible for planning the baby shower, inviting guests and creating games for the shower as well as preparing the cake and punch.
The girls each bought gifts and invited a guest who also took a gift to the shower which was held on July 29.
The troop members decided to donate the gifts to the baby girl born closest to Oct. 31 at Russellville Hospital. The lucky recipient of the gifts was Shelby Parker who was born on Oct. 25.
Shelby and her mom, Lynn, met the troop at the hospital Nov. 2 to receive the gifts.
The girls were excited to find out that Lynn had also been a girl scout in North Carolina.
The members of the troop are getting close to receiving the bronze award with just a few more badges left to earn.
