PREP FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Oilers pick up win in opening round

Visiting Heidelberg High School scored 22 points in the first quarter and 14 in the last to the take the 36-22 upset win over Perry Central in the first round of the MHSAA Class 3A playoffs on Friday night.
Heidelberg led 22-6 after one quarter of play, thanks to touchdown runs of 2, 12 and 24 yards by Darius Dear and a pair of two-point conversion runs by Kendall Cooper.
Perry Central scored on a 70-yard run in the first quarter and a 46-yard run and a 40-yard pass play in the third quarter to tie the game at 22-22.
But the Oilers scored on a 6-yard run by Raphael Jones, a two-point conversion by Cooper and 44-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Lawrence Burns.

Newton 14
The visiting Newton Tigers nearly pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the first night of the MHSAA playoffs, but McLaurin rallied from a 14-point deficit to take the 17-14 win
The Tigers took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter when Tyrone Waters picked up a fumble and raced 33 yards for the touchdown. The conversion failed.
Newton scored in the second quarter on a 10-yard run by Phillip Evans. Colby Tillman tacked on the two-point conversion.
McLaurin, 10-1 overall, cut it to 14-2 at the half thanks to a safety.
The home team scored on a 1-yard run by Kevin Quick and a two-point conversion by Tyler Warren in the third quarter to make it 14-10 going into the last quarter of play.
Quick scored on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter, and Ryan Odom booted the point after to give the home team the three-point win.

Lumberton 47
Enterprise 0
The Lumberton High School Panthers were hitting on all cylinders as they rolled to a 47-0 victory over Enterprise in the first round of the Class 2A South Mississippi high school playoffs at Panther Stadium.
Lumberton, ranked fourth in the state in the Associated Press Little 10 poll of small schools, looked every bit like one of the favorites to win the 2A state title, and the Panthers didn't take anything for granted against Enterprise.
Lumberton (10-1) will host McLaurin next Friday in the second round of the playoffs. Enterprise ended its season 5-6.
The Panthers scored touchdowns on their first four possessions of the game to take a 28-0 lead in the second quarter.
The Panthers showed their unity on their first possession, with Rashad Henry as the featured back, running for 16 yards for the first Lumberton score.
The 160-pound sophomore finished with 94 yards on just four carries.
The one guy most teams worry about is Terry Grant, a 5-10, 175-pound junior who is being courted by a host of Division I programs. Grant led Lumberton with 164 yards on 11 carries.
On Lumberton's next possession, Grant scampered 43 yards for a touchdown. Then Henry added his second score on a 57-yard run, getting the touchdown on the first play after Jamiah Holder intercepted a Bulldog pass.

South Leake 0
The Rebels ran their record to a perfect 11-0 with a solid win over South Leake on Friday night.
Mitch Bradford opened the scoring parade with a 61-yard touchdown run, followed by a 22-yard scoring pass play from Shawn Bounds to Julian Williams.
Jeremy Williams then ran one in from 32-yards out, followed by a 41-yard pass from Bounds to Calen Boswell.
Legg McBeath scored on a 54-yard punt return and Jeremy Williams scored on a 21-yard run, before Marquez Stowers wrapped up Scott Central's scoring with a fumble recovery in the end zone.
Scott Central opens MHSAA Class 1A playoff action at home on Friday night.

St. Andrews 42
Lake 14
St. Andrews scored 42 points in the first half to oust visiting Lake from the MHSAA Class 2A playoffs.
St. Andrews built up a 28-0 lead before Lake got on the scoreboard in the second quarter on a 28-yard pass from Maurice Pinkston to Eric Carter.
Trailing 42-6 in the fourth quarter, Terrell Ricks scored on a 1-yard run for the Hornets. He also ran in the two-point conversion.
Lake finishes the season at 2-9.
