Hunters can sight in their firearms for free on the new rifle shooting range at the Meridian Public Safety Training Center this Saturday. The facility offers target stands at 100, 200 and 300 yards distance.
Bunky Partridge, Homeland Security Director for the city of Meridian noted, "This is a way we can be of service to the public." Partridge went on to say that the current rifle and pistol ranges at the site are just in the beginning stage of development. There is hope that the facility will be available for public use in the future.
The center is located on Sand Flat road just east of the highway 45 bypass over highway 19 South. Traveling southeast from Meridian on Highway 19, turn right onto Sand Flat road and stay to the right at the next turn which is a continuation of Sand Flat Road. After driving a short distance, the center will be visible on the right.
Shooters should report to the Center at 9 a.m. Saturday. By 9:30 a.m. the sight-in event will proceed.
The Saturday sight-in day is sponsored by the Training Center and the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks (MDWFP). Personnel led by Bunky Partridge, and Bobby Wilder, Conservation Officer for the MDWFP, will conduct a brief safety presentation before the sighting-in session.
Hunters understand the importance of checking the sight alignment of stored rifles and those shooting new loads or different brands of ammunition.
The event will be held rain or shine. More information is available by calling the Meridian Public Safety Training Center at (601) 484-6890.
