Danny McDowell notified members of the Russellville city council and Mayor Johnny Brown Friday of his resignation as city attorney, effective Nov. 1.
According to a copy of a letter McDowell sent to the council obtained by the FCT, McDowell is resigning due to ongoing conflicts between family activities and city council meetings.
Brown said he was sorry to see McDowell go.
McDowell has been the city attorney for the last four years. He took over that position from Bill Bouldin, who served as city attorney for 12 years during John Blackwell's three terms as mayor.
City councilman and mayor pro tem Craig Grissom said he was surprised by the resignation.
The council is expected to name a new city attorney at tomorrow night's meeting. The meeting was postponed a week from Oct. 18 due to the members attending a meeting in Birmingham.
