Martha Stennis says someone gave her a piece of advice years ago that she still believes in today: "Paint what you know and paint only what you love."
Bonnie Busbee's Art Frame and Gallery will host the opening reception for an exhibit of Stennis' work on Thursday from 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m.
Stennis is a native Mississippian. She received a bachelor's degree in fine arts from the University of Mississippi in 1963. After many years in contract interior design in the southeastern United States, and a seven-year stint as editor of The Clarke County Tribune, she married and moved to Macon where she returned to her first love, painting, with the encouragement of her husband, attorney Hardy R. Stennis.
She is a member of the American Artist Professional League, and two of her paintings have been included in the organization's Grand National Exhibits at Salmagundi Club in New York.
Stennis has attained signature membership status in the Mississippi Watercolor Society, and is an artist member of two regional art museum groups, including the Meridian Museum of Art.
She has received honors from the Mississippi Watercolor Society, the Tennessee Valley Art Association, The Cottonlandia Museum in Greenwood and the West Bank Art League of New Orleans.
Stennis said sometimes she is tempted to hurry and paint.
Where: Bonnie Busbee Art Frame and Gallery, 712 23rd Ave.
When: The opening reception is Thursday, 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. Regular gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
