ENTERPRISE The Enterprise High School Bulldogs played their version of smash-mouth football, as they pounded out a 32-8 victory over the Newton Tigers on Saturday.
The Bulldogs evened their record to 2-2 for the season, and Newton fell to 0-4.
The Bulldogs had two runners with 100-yard games. Senior fullback Ike McIkelvain had 113 yards on 16 carries, and sophomore back Curtis Latney picked up 109 markers on 17 carries.
As a team, the Bulldogs had 294 rushing yards on 50 carries and 28 passing yards for 322 total yards and 17 first downs. Newton was held to 27 yards rushing and 83 passing for 110 total yards.
Enterprise took the opening kickoff and marched it 68 yards on 11 plays for the first touchdown of the night. Latney's 20-yard run moved the ball inside the Newton 14-yard line. Three plays later, Latney bolted 11 yards for pay dirt. Wade Weathers kicked the extra point and the Bulldogs held a 7-0 lead with 6:29 remaining in the first quarter.
That's how it stood until late in the second quarter when snap from center got past the Newton punter and rolled into the end zone. Justin Mars made the tackle for the safety and Enterprise led 9-0 with 1:52 left in the half.
Newton kicked the ball to Enterprise and the Bulldogs took over on the NHS 46. A Tiger penalty moved the ball down to the NHS 31. After an incomplete pass, Baron Blackwell rushed for 10 yards, and Latney added 14 as Enterprise pushed the ball down to the Newton 6 with time running out. Weathers booted a 23-yard field goal ,and the Bulldogs led 12-0 at intermission.
On the second play of the third quarter, it appeared Newton was about to get back into the game. Newton put the ball in the end zone on a 60-yard run, but the scoring run was called back because of a penalty and Newton punted four plays later.
Enterprise marched the ball down to the Tigers' 28-yard lines, and Weathers connected with Blackwell on a 28-yard TD toss. Weathers kicked the extra point and Enterprise led 19-0.
Blackwell hit pay dirt again later in the quarter on a 15-yard run, wrapping up a six-play, 72-yard drive. The extra-point try failed and Enterprise led 25-0.
The Bulldogs got the ball back on the kick off, as Dakota Owens recovered on the Newton 43-yard line.
Enterprise went in for another touchdown with McIkelvain going in on a 12-yard run. Wade booted the extra point and Enterprise led 32-0 at the start of the fourth quarter.
Newton's touchdown came when Tyrone Waters picked up a fumble and ran 60 yards for pay dirt. Montez Moore caught a pass from Courtney Ruffin for the two point conversion to end the scoring.
Both teams will be back in action Friday night. Enterprise visits Lake, and Newton High plays Kemper County.
