Union dethrones Newton Co.

UNION Since their school was founded in 1990, the Newton County High School Lady Cougars have ruled the slow-pitch softball world in Newton County… until now.
Union, which lost each of its first 20 games with the Lady Cougars (12 by double-digit margins), completed a two-game sweep in 2004 Saturday night at Laird Park to take over the top rung on the ladder.
The Lady Jackets got 20 hits in run-ruling Newton County 12-2 in six innings. The Lady Cougars had seven hits, all of which were singles.
Leadoff batter Morgan Milling went 4-for-4 to lead Union, 11-4.
Milling scored one run and drove in another, while Kennedy scored twice and had one RBI.
Union scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning with Amechia Hickmon and Paige Holsen having RBI singles.
The Lady Jackets extended their lead to 8-0 with five more runs in the second frame. Tiffany Thomas had an RBI single, and winning pitcher Chasity Yates (10-4) hit a two-run single.
Newton County got both of its runs in the top of the third with an outfield error plating one run and the second coming home on a single by Kasie Buckley.
Kennedy had a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third to put Union up 9-2.
Milling doubled home the 10th run in the fifth.
Morgan Breland closed out the game with an RBI single in the sixth.
Thomas went 3-for-3, while Breland, Hickmon, Brittany Germany, and Amber Smith each had two hits.
Newton County dropped to 6-8. Chassidy Smith (6-8) got the loss.
