Dan Napier put Simpson Academy on his back along with a few Lamar defenders and carried the Cougars to a 38-14 win over the Raiders on Friday night at Grey Cobb Field.
The Raiders avoided turnovers for most of the game but ran out of steam on defense and Simpson slipped through for its 17th straight victory.
Napier finished the night with 239 rushing yards and Preston Harris ran for 93 yards to lead the Cougars.
Lamar was able to draw first blood in the game with a quick-strike offense. Scott Owen connected with Dustin Gray for a 63-yard pass to move the ball to the one and Owen finished off the drive with a one-yard touchdown run. The PAT failed and Lamar had to settle for the early 6-0 lead.
Simpson Academy answered to take back the lead in the first quarter.
Napier led the Cougars on a nine-play 65-yard drive and scored on a two-yard run to tie the game. Justin Blair added the PAT to make the score 7-6.
Simpson recovered the following kickoff deep in Lamar territory but the Raiders forced the Cougars to punt with a strong defensive stand.
Though the Raiders were unable to pick up the win, Lamar avoided turnovers and moved the ball through the air well.
Owen finished the night with 231 yards passing. Gray finished with 141 receiving yards and Harrison had five catches for 61 yards.
