DECATUR For five innings Thursday afternoon, the Southeast Lauderdale bats were almost as effective as swinging wet noodles as the Lady Tigers had just one hit. And it didn't get out of the infield.
Of the first 15 Lady Tiger batters, Newton County recorded 15 outs with Lady Cougar shortstop Kasie Buckley helping turn a pair of double plays.
Over the next two frames, however, Southeast had 10 hits and rallied from a 5-0 deficit to eventually take an 8-6 Division 5-3A win in 12 innings.
Catcher Andrea Wilson went 4-for-5 with four RBIs to lead Southeast as the Lady Tigers improved to 12-3 overall and 6-1 in 5-3A. Her double in the top of the 12th snapped a 6-6 tie. Lindsey Graham's triple plated a big insurance run.
Newton County scored three runs in the second inning and added single runs in the third and fourth frames to grab a 5-0 lead. Lindsey Stevens had a pair of RBI singles with Callie Cumberland driving in one run with a fielder's choice and Melissa Robinson adding a sacrifice fly.
Southeast scored twice in the top of the sixth on an RBI double by Rose and a single by Wilson.
The Lady Tigers tallied four times in the seventh with Megan McMullen and Rose having run-scoring infield hits and Wilson adding a two-run single for a 6-5 lead.
Bettina McDougle led off the bottom of the seventh with her second triple of the game.
Pinch runner Summer Alexander scored on a sacrifice fly by Stevens, although the Southeast folks contended Alexander left the base prior to the catch.
Southeast got two hits each from Rose, McMullen, Mallarie Bowen, winning pitcher Heather Harper and Graham.
McDougle went 3-for-5 to lead Newton County (6-7, 4-3). Stevens, Lindsey Little and Kristin Pillsbury each had two hits with Buckley getting a triple.
Chassidy Smith (6-7) took the loss.
Southeast returns to action Saturday afternoon at Wayne County. Newton County goes to Union on Saturday night.
