    Excellence in Education

    By Staff
    September 2, 2004
Joyce Scott George will receive the Gloria Nuckolls Memorial Scholarship at Meridian Community College, a $1,000 award funded through the MCC Foundation.
This endowment was established to provide a scholarship for a student in a health-related field.
George is a 1982 graduate of Meridian High School. She has been a stay-at-home mom to her four children, home schooling them for seven of those years. After enrolling her children in the public school system, she returned to college to resume her education.
She is a sophomore in the Physical Therapist Assistant Program; she plans to enter the work force upon graduation in May 2005.
The recipient of the Dan Self/Robbie Jones pre-law scholarship is Barry L. Howard of Stonewall. Local attorneys Dan Self and Robbie Jones fund this $1,000 award through the MCC Foundation.
Howard is a 2003 graduate of Quitman High School where he was a member of the Math Club, Student Council, Quitman High School Chorus and the annual staff. He was named to Who's Who Among American High School Students.
He is a volunteer with the Clarke County Sheriff's Office and works summers off-shore. A sophomore in the University Transfer Program, his career goal is to become an attorney.
The recipient of the Jacob Chester Frist Memorial Scholarship at Meridian Community College is Donna Caraway Mitchell of Meridian. This $1,200 award is funded through the MCC Foundation from an endowment established by Dr. Thomas Frist in memory of his father.
Mitchell is a 1987 graduate of Clarkdale Attendance Center. A dean's list scholar, she is entering her third semester of the Associate's Degree Nursing Program with plans to graduate in May 2005. She is a member of the Mississippi Organization for Associate Degree Nursing.
She works part time at Riley Hospital, where she will continue to work after graduation as a surgical nurse.
Christina Mann of Philadelphia and LaWanda McCree of Quitman have been selected to receive the Elizabeth Welsh Riley Nursing Scholarships at Meridian Community College.
These $1,200 awards are funded through the MCC Foundation from an endowment seeded by a group of nurses that cared for Mrs. Riley during her extended illness.
Dr. William G. Riley completed the endowment and continues to make substantial memorial gifts.
Mann is a 1995 honors graduate of Philadelphia High School. A third semester student in the Associates Degree Nursing Program, she is a member of the Organization of Student Nurses and the Mississippi Organization for Associate Degree Nursing. She works part time at Riley Hospital and is the preschool director at her church.
McCree is a 1993 graduate of Quitman High School. She graduated from the Practical Nursing Program in 2001 and is entering the third semester of the associate's degree program. She is a member of the Mississippi Organization for Associate Degree Nursing. She plans to pursue a bachelor's degree in nursing.
