The Lamar girls' soccer team got off to a slow start at Northeast Park on Thursday night and it cost them.
Jackson Academy jumped out to a three-goal lead in the first half and went on to beat Lamar 4-1.
JA put pressure on Lamar early in the first half as Massey Buckner connected with Jane Gray with a pass for a breakaway. Lamar goal keeper Sara Beth Fouts stepped out and made a great save to keep the game scoreless.
The visiting Raiders got on the board later in the first half as Buckner chipped a shot over the keeper and in to take 1-0 lead.
Later in the first half, JA's Bethany Frazier hit Whitney Kramer with a pass. Frazier's shot was saved but the rebound came back out and Frazier put it away for a 2-0 advantage.
Minutes later, the visiting Raiders struck again as Kristen Vice scored on a header off a corner kick. JA took a 3-0 lead into halftime.
Lamar finally put some pressure on JA in the second half. After JA made a pass back to its keeper, Sumner Brown blocked the keeper's kick but was unable to get a shot off before the ball was kicked free.
JA came back to score another goal early in the second half to put the game away.
Michelle Mailly broke free behind the defense and scored on a shot into the left side of the net to for a 4-0 lead.
Lamar answered back minutes later to break up the shutout. Jessi Fort crossed the ball off a free kick and Emily Thompson headed it in to produce the game's final margin.
JA continued to keep the pressure on the homestanding Raiders in the second half.
Fouts made a save on a breakaway shot and was able to make a diving save later in the half to keep JA from scoring, but Lamar was also kept off the scoreboard.
With the loss, Lamar falls to 0-2 for the year. The Raiders will be back in action this weekend with three games in a tournament at Pillow Academy.
