Durant boys put on a show

NEWTON The Durant boys basketball team put on a shooting clinic in the final game of first day of the State Games of Mississippi high school basketball tournament.
Playing in Pool III at the Newton County High School gym, the Tigers knocked down 12 three-pointers in a 70-51 win over host Newton County.
Durant is in first place in Pool III, as the Tigers also picked up a 52-50 win over South Pike in the first day of action. The Tigers will take on Bay Springs at 11:30 a.m. today to decide which team will advance to the semifinals.
Bay Springs is 1-1 entering today's game with Durant. The Bulldogs defeated South Pike 64-59, but lost to Newton County 54-45.
Choctaw Central is in front in Pool IV, which is being played at Newton High School's gym. The Warriors defeated Lake 66-57 and North Forest 61-50.
Choctaw Central will meet Newton at 11:30 a.m. today in it final game of pool play. Newton has a 1-1 mark entering today, defeating North Forest 40-37 but losing to Lake 56-53.
Durant 70

Johnathan Boyd hit a four-point play he was fouled while knocking down a three-pointer to give Durant a 9-7 lead in the game's opening four minutes against Newton County.
The Tigers didn't relinquished the lead the rest of the game, as Boyd finished with a game-high 23 points. Jeremy Binkly, who scored his team's last 12 points of the first half, scored 20 for Durant, and Terrance Simmon added 13.
Jose Alcanter scored nine points for Newton County, and Tristan Hudnall added eight.
Durant 52
S. Pike 50
Simmon and Binkley each scored 18 points for Durant in the team's first win of the day over South Pike.
Clyde Moore chipped in 13 for the Tigers. Names of players were not available for South Pike.
Newton Co. 54
Bay Springs 45
Alcanter scored a game-high 13 points for Newton County, as the Cougars notched a nine-point win over Bay Springs.
Rico Hughes and Tristan Hudnall each tallied 12 points for Newton County.
LaBaton Jones scored 11 points for Bay Springs, and James Newall and Brandon McCully notched 10 and nine, respectively.
Bay Springs 64

Jones tallied a team-high 13 points for Bay Springs in the win over South Pike.
Regis Hudden scored 11 points for Bay Springs, and Shamus McMullum and Newall each had eight. Names of players were not available for South Pike.
Lake 56
Newton 53
Lee Johnson scored a team-high 13 points for Lake in a win over Newton.
Desmond Morales tallied 12 points for Lake, and Marcus Lukom and Rashawn Towner each had nine.
Kolby Tillman scored a game-high 17 points for Newton, and Brandon Shelton added 15. Steve Edwards scored eight for Newton.
Individual scorers were not reported for the following games: Choctaw Central's 66-57 win over Lake, Newton's 40-37 victory over North Forest and Choctaw Central's 61-50 win over North Forest.
