John "Doc" Stephens, athletic director, facilities director and teacher at Lamar School, has been named head of school effective June 1.
Stephens replaces Fred Brashier, who is retiring. Stephens also will serve as high school and middle school principal for the 2004-2005 school year.
Stephens, 52, a Lamar employee for four years, said he has no plans to make immediate changes at the school.
Stephens holds a bachelor of science degree in mathematics, with a minor in education. He also has a master's of education degree with a mathematics emphasis.
He has completed necessary additional graduate courses in administration to receive Class AA certification from the Mississippi Private School Association as a headmaster.
Stephens brings to the position 29 years of experience in teaching, coaching, athletic administration and facilities administration.
He has worked for schools in Cleveland, Vicksburg, Clinton and Gulfport. He also has received honors that include being named Star Teacher and Teacher of the Year.
In addition, Stephens has work experience as a computer software developer and manager in private industry and for several U.S. government agencies.
Stephens said he will use the summer to learn more about the administrative procedures of his new job and be prepared for the new school year.
