Meridian was not the only part of Lauderdale County hit by the floods of April 2003.
Bailey Fire Chief Stanley Lucky said heavy rain also caused damage in areas north of Meridian and forced residents to evacuate their homes.
Torrential rains moved into Lauderdale County on April 6, 2003, causing flash floods that lasted through the next day and flooding later that week in Clarke and Wayne counties along the Chickasawhay River.
The heavy rains caused dangerous driving conditions. At some point on April 6 and 7, Lucky said, the water created a 5-foot-deep hole in Highway 493.
Lucky said a command post was immediately set up at the Bailey fire station where he and more than 20 volunteer firefighters rotated shifts and fielded hundreds of phone calls from concerned residents.
