Newton County takes 5-3A softball title

Newton County claimed the Division 5-3A fast-pitch softball championship on Wednesday with an 8-2 win over West Lauderdale.
Joy Cavenaugh pitched a complete game for Newton County, scattering five hits and striking out 12. Cavenaugh improved her record to 10-3.
Newton County, which committed no errors, jumped out quickly with four runs in the first inning, then was held scoreless until the seventh when it added its last four runs.
PREP BASEBALL
Carthage 11
Choctaw Central 0
Carthage (6-10) scored early and often to take the win over the Warriors on Tuesday night. Eric Dowell led the Tigers with three hits including a home run and Ricardo Smith added a pair of singles for Carthage.
Dowell also took the pitching win for the Tigers and surrendered only two hits.
Newton County 3
Forest 2
The Cougars scored two runs late in the sixth inning to take a one-run over Forest on Tuesday night. Jared Cavenaugh took the win on the mound and moved to 7-1 for the season.
Justin Farmer led Newton County with two hits including a triple and Bud Loper added a double. Austin Wilbanks led the Bearcats with a pair of hits including a double.
Lake 20
Kemper County 2
The Hornets had no troubles on Tuesday by scoring 15 runs in the second inning to walk away with the win. Adam Brown led Lake with three hits and Markus Ricks added a home run.
Zack Edwards picked up the pitching win and improved to 2-0.
Kosciusko 10
Louisville 3
The Wildcats dropped yet another district game on Tuesday night after beginning the season on a great winning streak. Chris Perry led Louisville on offense with a double and Cody Kelley took the pitching loss for the Wildcats.
Isreal Leapard led Kosciusko with four hits, including a double.
Noxapater 11
West Lowndes 7
Noxapater (9-5) took a key divisional win over West Lowndes on Tuesday night thanks to a great performance at the plate from Chris and David Edwards.
David and Chris both had three hits apiece in the game to led the offense. David Edwards took the pitching win for Noxapater and improved to 4-1.
PREP TENNIS
Newton County 4
Forest 1
The Cougars improved to 10-2 overall with a 4-1 team win against Forest in tennis action on Tuesday. Kennard Johnson took a 6-0, 6-2 win over Justin Hurdle in boy's singles action, while Kalen Anderson defeated Katie Sahler 7-6, 6-4 in girl's singles.
Noah Cook and Devara Walker defeated Joseph Creglo and Matt Wade in boy's doubles by a final of 6-4, 6-2, while Lauren McDonald and Dru Anderson defeated Mollie Creglo and Megan Harrell 6-0, 6-0 to sweep double's action.
The only loss of the day came in mixed doubles as Josh Cook and Maggie McDill lost to Wade Brown and Rebecca Myers by a final of 4-6, 6-4, 4-6.
PREP GOLF
The Lamar Raiders took home first place honors on Tuesday in the Lamar Invitational at Northwood Country Club. Derrick Smith posted the best score of the day for Lamar (Blue) with a low round score of 73 to led the Raiders to a team score of 303.
Lamar (Red) was led by Elliot Tramontana with a low score of 80. Katherine Jones took home the medalist honor with a score of 72 for Jackson Academy.
