The Mississippi Forestry Commission, along with volunteer fire units from Newton and Scott counties, responded to a wildfire Tuesday that engulfed more than 95 acres of land on Will Brown Road in Newton County.
Terry Smith, a forest ranger, said the fire began around 2 p.m. as a resident of Newton County was burning off a garden spot. Smith said the fire quickly spread and threatened at least 12 structures all of which were saved.
Smith said the fire was contained by 7 p.m. He said the lack of rain and heavy winds contributed to the fire, and that weather has contributed to several wild fires in Newton County in the past few weeks.
