Waller on the ballot

Mississippi Supreme Court Justice William L. "Bill" Waller Jr. of Jackson brings strong credentials to his re-election campaign. He kicked things off Tuesday on the steps of the Lauderdale County Courthouse.
The incumbent, first elected in 1996, is the first candidate to announce for the Central District Post 1 position. The qualifying deadline is May 7 and the election takes place Nov. 2
Waller, son of former Gov. Bill Waller, believes he has brought common sense, fairness and hard work to the bench. Waller has worked to reduce the backlog of cases in the Supreme Court, writing many opinions.
Waller has advocated court reforms as chairman of the court's Rules Committee since 2001, including the adoption of rules promoting the settlement of cases through mediation. He also cites advancements requiring out-of-state attorneys to register with Mississippi if they practice in the state and allowing cameras in the courtroom.
He served 29 years in the Mississippi Army National Guard, rising to the rank of brigadier general. He is a graduate of Mississippi State University and received his law degree from the University of Mississippi.
All told, Justice Waller has compiled an excellent record.
