JACKSON Choctaw Central will shoot for its first Girls Class 3A State Championship today.
The Lady Warriors (35-2) take on defending 3A champion Ripley in the opening game of the second day of the high school state championship round at Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson.
Choctaw Central has won three girls' state basketball titles in 2A. The Lady Warriors won the championship in 1996, 1997 and 1999.
Ripley won the title last year, edging out West Lauderdale 50-43.
The Lady Warriors will tip off against the Lady Tigers at 1 p.m. The game will be televised by Mississippi Public Broadcasting.

Newton County senior pitcher Joy Cavenaugh has two no-hitters to her credit already this fast-pitch season. The latest bat silencing came in an 8-0 win over West Jones last week.

Philly girls hot too
The Philadelphia Lady Tornadoes upped their record to 5-0 with an 11-1 win over Riverside Tuesday. Jillian Sparnecht (1-0) got the win.
Shelby Smith (4-0) got the decisions in the previous four games.

Softball Spring Fling
The Clarkdale softball team will host a Spring Fling softball tournament on March 19-20.
The tournament will have four pools running throughout the two days of competition, with games starting at 1 p.m. on the first day and 10 a.m. on the second day.
In pool 1, Clarkdale and Winona will throw out the first pitch at 1 p.m. on March 19.
Kosciusko takes on Gautier at 2:30 p.m.; Winona meets Bibb County at 4 p.m., Gautier and Clarkdale play at 5:30 p.m.; and Bibb County and Kosciusko round out day one action at 7 p.m.
On the second day, Winona and Gautier clash in the first game of pool-1 action at 10 a.m.
Moss Point meets Kosciusko at 11:30 a.m.; Bibb County takes on Gautier at 1 p.m.; Moss Point plays Winona at 2:30 p.m.; Kosciusko takes on Clarkdale at 4 p.m.; Bibb County and Moss Point are in action at 5:30 p.m.; and Clarkdale closes out the final day against Moss Point at 7 p.m.
In pool 2, Demopolis opens play against Clinton at 1 p.m. on March 19.
Neshoba and Tuscaloosa County meet at 2:30 p.m.; Southaven takes on East Central at 4 p.m.; Neshoba and Clinton clash at 5:30 p.m.; Demopolis plays East Central at 7 p.m.; and Southaven rounds out the opening-day action against Tuscaloosa County at 8:30 p.m.
On the second day, Demopolis and Neshoba throw out the first pitch in pool-2 play at 10 a.m.
Clinton and East Central play at 11:30 a.m.; Southaven takes on Demopolis at 1 p.m.; East Central meets Tuscaloosa County at 2:30 p.m.; Southaven clashes with Neshoba at 4 p.m.; and Tuscaloosa County concludes pool-2 play against Clinton at 5:30 p.m.
In pool 3, Kossuth opens play against Eupora at 1 p.m. on March 19.
DeSoto and Union meet at 2:30 p.m.; Enterprise and Hale County meet at 4 p.m.; Kossuth takes on Union at 5:30 p.m.; Enterprise plays Eupora at 7 p.m.; and DeSoto closes opening-day play against Hale County at 8:30 p.m.
On the second day, Kossuth and Enterprise meet in the first game in pool-3 play at 10 a.m.
Hale County meets Union at 11:30 a.m.; DeSoto takes on Kossuth at 1 p.m.; Hale County plays Eupora at 2:30 p.m.; DeSoto and Enterprise take the field at 4 p.m.; and Union closes play in pool 3 against Eupora at 5:30 p.m.
In pool 4, Mooreville and Newton County throw out the first pitch at 1 p.m. on March 19.
Grenada and Pascagoula play at 2:30 p.m.; Harrison Central and Caledonia clash at 4 p.m.; Mooreville takes on Pascagoula at 5:30 p.m.; Harrison Central competes against Newton County at 7 p.m., and Grenada and Caledonia finish the first day at 8:30 p.m.
On the second day, Pascagoula and Newton County throw out the first pitch in pool-4 action at 10 a.m.
Mooreville and Harrison Central meet at 11:30 a.m.; Caledonia and Pascagoula play at 1 p.m.; Grenada takes on Mooreville at 2:30 p.m.; Caledonia will take on Newton County at 4 p.m.; and Grenada finishes pool-4 play against Harrison Central at 5:30 p.m.
