Hinds AHS edges out Tornadoes

HEIDELBERG The Philadelphia Tornadoes were only two minutes away from advancing to the semifinals of the Class 2A South State Tournament on Thursday night.
The Tornadoes had everything in their favor with a seven-point lead in the closing moments of the fourth quarter, but the Hinds AHS Bulldogs turned the tide with a couple of key baskets in the final 30 seconds to hand Philadelphia a heartbreaking 52-51 loss.
Both teams had their shooting woes in the first quarter, but the Tornadoes held a slim 9-8 lead heading into the second quarter of action. Hinds AHS was able to take its first lead of the game by a score of 21-20 with 3:01 left in the second thanks to a jump shot from Antonio Myles.
Hinds AHS took a 27-25 lead at the end of the first half, as the Bulldogs held the Tornadoes to only one field goal in the final three minutes of the first half.
Hinds AHS took advantage of four missed free throws by the Tornadoes in the final minute to tie the game at 50 with 29 seconds left in the fourth. Goodin hit one of two free throws from the line moments later for Philadelphia, but Hinds AHS had the final chance to take the win.
The Bulldogs drove the full length of the floor and scored the game-winning basket on a layup inside by K'Swaya Mofett to give Hinds AHS a 52-51 win.
Goodin led the way for Philadelphia with 18 points, while Beamon and Eric Lyons chipped in with 14 points apiece. Brown led Hinds AHS with 13 points and Maurice Kelly added 10 points in the win.
Hinds AHS (25-7) advances to play the host Heidelberg Oilers today at 7:30 p.m. Bassfield defeated Williams-Sullivan by a final score of 82-81 in the early game, while Lumberton dominated Bay Springs by a final score of 62-46. Bassfield and Lumberton will meet at 6 p.m. in the other semifinal game.

The Oilers jumped out to an early 10-point lead and held off a late Perry Central charge to take the quarterfinal win over the Bulldogs. Heidelberg led 14-5 at the end of the first quarter, paced by eight points in the paint by Andre Stephens.
Perry Central cut the lead to 17-16 with 4:11 left in the second quarter on a pair of jump shots by Travis Moody.
Jordan Payne and Andre Stephens led the way with 28 points apiece in the win while Travis Stephens and Shannon Jones added 10 points apiece for Heidelberg.
Calvin Bolton led Perry Central with 20 points and D.J. Griffin added 17 points in the loss for the Bulldogs.
