West dominates honors

West Lauderdale placed six players on the All-Region 5-3A football team, tying the Knights with Forest as the most heavily honored squad in the division.
Three other West Lauderdale players were tabbed for individual honors.
Knights defensive end Maurice McDonald, a senior, received Region 5-3A's Most Valuable Player award. Senior offensive lineman Brock Martin was named Best Offensive Lineman, and sophomore Michael Pogue was selected for the Best Kicker award.
McDonald is small for his position at 5-foot-10 and 175 pounds, but McCain said McDonald's work ethic set him apart.
Martin brought the same attitude, McCain said. The 6-foot, 230-pound Martin helped anchor the Knights' physical ground game throughout the season.
Pogue was one of three West Lauderdale sophomores who were honored. McCain said Pogue could have made the team as a quarterback, but was greatly deserving as a kicker.
West Lauderdale seniors Eric Smith and Travaris Williams were named to the All-Region team, as were juniors Caleb Dulamey and Scott Truesdale. Judd Godwin and Dameon Baylor made the team as sophomores.
Thomas Mercer, Justin Landrum, Josh Hanible, Christian Trussell and Danny Siefker were named Honorable Mentions for the division.
Of the 14 West Lauderdale players who received individual, All-Region or Honorable Mention honors, only six are seniors. McCain said that has him excited about the Knights' future.
