The Philadelphia Tornadoes warmed up for its Philadelphia Christmas Holiday Classic with a 74-68 win over Kemper County on Friday night.
The one-day, five-game Classic is set for Saturday at the Philadelphia High School gym. The Tornadoes, 9-3, take on the 2-7 Yellowjackets of Union in the final game of the day at 6 p.m.
The event features four boys games, as well as a 2:15 p.m. girls game between Philadelphia and Morton. The only other game involving area schools is the 4:45 contest between the Choctaw Central boys and West Lowndes.
In the game with Kemper County on Friday night, Bobby Goodin poured in 25 pounds and Trey Beamon added 22 to lead the Tornadoes. Eric Lyons also had 18 points in the win.
After trailing 29-24 at half, Philadephia outscored the Wildcats 21-9 in the third quarter and held on for the victory.
Colby Wren had 25 pounts and Shardricus Thompson added 18 in the loss for Kemper County.
Scott Central boys 76
Lake 63
Scott Central outscored Lake 15-4 in the first quarter and rolled to a 76-63 win.
Scott Central led 39-22 at half and held on to pick up the win to improve to 11-1 for the season.
Pierre Barlow led the Rebels with 32 points while Eddie Patrick added 13. Tyrone Bobbit led Lake with 13 points. Ivon Hickmon, Danny Towner and Lee Johnson also added 11 points in the loss.
Winston Academy boys 54
Wayne Academy 32
Winston Academy jumped out to an early lead and moved on to a 54-32 win over Wayne Academy in recent prep basketball action.
Winston outscored Wayne 18-8 in the first quarter and led 24-18 at half. Winston then outscored the Jaguars 12-4 in the third quarter to stretch the lead and pick up the win.
Taylor Paschal led the Patriots to the win with 18 points. Patrick Peterson and Brandon Jennings each had 11 points.
Patton Stanley led the Jaguars in the loss with 16 points.
Hillcrest (Tenn.) girls 55
Noxubee County 49
Hillcrest held off a charge by Noxubee County to pick up a 55-49 win in recent girls basketball action.
After being outscored 17-8 in the first quarter and trailing 28-18 at half, Noxubee County outscored Hillcrest 16-8 in the third quarter to cut the lead down to two points.
Hillcrest held off the comeback, however, and outscored Noxubee County 19-15 in the final quarter to pick up the victory.
Lashonda Adams led Hillcrest with 26 points and Janeica Gross had 18.
Brittany Tate scored 15 points for Noxubee County.
Columbus girls 57
Kemper County 43
Columbus used a good first half to take a lead and held off Kemper County to take a 57-43 win.
Columbus jumped out to a 13-5 lead after the first quarter and led 29-16 at half.
Columbus picked up the win as Kemper County was unable to cut into the lead in the second half.
Bianca Jones, Sierra Jones and Ninna Fitzgerald each scored 10 points for Columbus in the win. Melody Nave had 16 points to lead Kemper County.
Newton Academy girls 45
University Christian 29
Newton Academy used a strong first half to beat University Christian 45-29 in recent girls basketball action.
The Lady Generals shut out UCS in the first quarter to take a big 15-0 lead. Newton went on to lead 23-10 at halftime.
Newton Academy held on in the second half for the 45-29 victory.
Erin Watson scored 18 points and Kasey Hall added 10 for Newton Academy in the win. Kristen Tubor had 19 points for UCS in the loss.
University Christian boys 50
Newton Academy 35
University Christian outscored Newton in the final three quarters of the game to pick up a 50-35 victory.
The Flames trailed 4-3 after a very low-scoring first quarter, but outscored Newton by six in the second and seven in the third to stretch out a lead.
University Christian then outscored the Generals 13-10 in the final quarter to pick up the win to improve to 12-2 for the season.
Daniel Zabaldano scored 10 points for University Christian. John Shellenback scored 23 to lead Newton.
Winston Academy boys 59
East Rankin 34
Winston Academy outscored East Ranking 22-10 in the third quarter to pick up a win in recent boys basketball action.
The Patriots also finished off the game by outscoring East Rankin 16-2 in the final quarter.
Justin Eaves scored 13 points fo rWinston while Brandon Jennings added 12 and Jon Duncan had 10. Curtis Weldon led East Rankin with 10 points in the loss.
East Rankin girls 55
Winston Academy 49
East Rankin jumped out to a lead in the first half and held on for a 55-49 win over Winston Academy.
East Rankin outscored the Lady Patriots 15-7 in the first quarter and 11-8 8 in the second half to build a lead and secured the win with a strong second half.
Emily Massey scored 18 points for East Rankin and Lauren Morrow scored 12. Crystal Sessums and Allison Taylor each scored 10 points in the victory.
Hope Estes scored 17 points and Tracie Whiteside had 15 for Winston in the loss.
Prep Soccer
West Lauderdale girls 2
Newton County 0
The Lady Knights picked up a big win over division rival Newton County 2-0 on Friday night in Collinsville.
Kylie Rowell put West Lauderdale on top with a goal off a pass by Sarah Birmingham.
Birmingham made the score 2-0 later in the game on a corner kick by Brittany Uhl.
Katie Moulds, who finished with four saves in goal, and the West Lauderdale defense shut out the Lady Cougars to pick up the win and improve to 3-0 in division play.
West Lauderdale boys 5
Newton County 0
Anthony Thomas scored two goals to lead the Knights to a 5-0 win on Friday night.
Christopher Rodgers, Michael Pogue and Corey Rigdon each added a goal in the win. Zach Chisolm had two assists in the game while Rodgers and Dan Confalt each assisted on a goal.
West improves to 4-0 in division play.
