Services for Virgil Evans Smith will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Suqualena United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jimmie Gunn officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with Barham Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Smith, 75, of Meridian, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2003, at Heartfelt Hospice. Formerly of Newport News, Va., Mr. Smith retired and moved to the Suqualena community where he was born. He lived there at his original home place for the past 11 years.
Mr. Smith was an active and devoted member of the Suqualena Methodist Church and the Suqualena community. He loved his many friends in the community and in turn was loved and admired for his simple and helpful lifestyle. His quiet lifestyle in retirement was in contrast to those who knew him during his earlier military service.
During that period of Mr. Smith's life, he had a great level of enthusiasm for his career and enjoyed the so called "spit and polish" of the military. An example of this occurred while he was stationed at Fort Eustis near Washington, D.C. During that time, among other honors, his ceremonial drill team received written praise from the news media for their performance during ceremonies honoring President Dwight Eisenhower.
Survivors include his two sons, Virgil Joseph Smith and Steven Smith, both of Woodbridge, Va.; his brother, Robert Durwood Smith of Quito, Ecaudor; and two sisters, Christine Smith Trawick of the Ponta community; and Sarah Smith Snowden of Wichita, Kansas.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Andrew Wilson Smith.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 5 p.m.-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Arrangements were incomplete at Barham Funeral Home for Gary Williamson, 70, of Collinsville, who died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center.
