Cynthia Ann Eiland of Louisville has been selected to receive the Margaret and Bill Smylie Memorial Scholarship for the fall and spring semesters at Meridian Community College. This $1,200 award is funded through the MCC Foundation from an endowment established by the Smylie Family.
Eiland, 39, is a sophomore in the associate degree Nursing program. She attended Louisville High School and completed her GED in 1984. She is the mother of three children ages, 21,19, and 14.
In addition to her daily commute from Louisville, her classes and her family, she works part time at the Diamond Grove Children/Adolescent Behavioral Facility. She plans to enter the workforce after graduation.
Justin Chancellor of Carthage and Ryan Moore of Meridian have been selected to receive the L.O. Todd Memorial Scholarships at Meridian Community College for the fall and spring semesters.
The $600 awards are funded through the MCC Foundation.
Justin is a 2002 graduate of Leake Academy. A dean's list scholar and an Ivy League recruiter, he is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honorary society for community college students.
Chancellor is a member of the Baptist Student Union and College Republicans. He is a sophomore in the University Transfer Program with plans to attend pharmacy school.
Moore, a 2002 honor graduate of Meridian High School, is a sophomore in the University Transfer Program with emphasis in business and Spanish. He is a member of the Baptist Student Union Leadership Team, the Variations, and the Chorus. He plans to attend seminary and ultimately become a foreign missionary.
At the "Celebrating Healthy Choices for Youth" conference held in Jackson, Hayley Shirley of Magnolia Middle School, Nancy Chisolm of Ross Collins Career and Technical Center and Ray Matheny of Harris Upper Elementary School presented their "Don't Judge a Book by Its Cover" workshop.
The workshop focused on increasing participants' recognition of the need to judge people as individuals and not resort to judgments based on stereotypes or assumptions about the person. The conference was co-hosted by Meridian Public Schools, Mississippi Department of Education, and the National Center for Youth Issues.
At the annual state convention of the Mississippi Counseling Association held in Philadelphia, Shirley, Chisolm and Matheny presented their workshop "Working 9 to 5, Careers by Choice or by Chance?"
The workshop is designed to raise awareness of the importance of career counseling and the impact that counselors can have on their students through career counseling.
