Autry could stay one more year

Meridian School Board members could ask interim Superintendent Sylvia Autry to remain on the job one more year while they continue to search for a permanent school district chief executive.
Board members discussed Autry's performance during a 11⁄2-hour closed meeting Monday. They took no action including whether to ask Autry to continue as interim superintendent.
Autry took over as interim superintendent July 1 after former Superintendent Janet McLin retired June 30. Before that, Autry had served as assistant superintendent of supervision and instruction under McLin.
School Board members began searching for a new superintendent earlier this year. The board has not interviewed any candidates for the job; Meridian has 13 public schools and more than 6,000 students.
Autry said she feels good about her performance as chief executive of the school district.
Autry said she would "strongly consider" serving as interim superintendent for another year if the board offers her the position. She had planned to retire last year before she was asked to serve as interim superintendent.
Autry said she told the board during its closed session that she is "satisfied with the progress to date." She said she also told the board she is not satisfied with the performance of every school in the district.
