The 46th-annual War of Winston County is set for Friday night as Noxapater hosts Nanih Waiya in a Region 3-1A contest.
Nanih Waiya has won the last two meetings, including a 21-14 battle at Noxapater last year, to trim the Tigers' lead in the series to 32-13.
Nanih Waiya lost 47-20 to Scott Central last week.
Noxapater fell 34-20 to South Leake.
The Tigers are 2-2 overall and 1-2 in 3-1A. Nanih Waiya is 2-2 overall and in 3-1A.
Wayne Academy
at Winston Academy
The Jaguars and Patriots have had much success in recent years, but if Winston Academy is going to have any this fall, the Patriots will have to upset Wayne Friday night in Louisville.
Wayne improved to 2-0 in Academy 3-A and 2-3 overall with last week's 41-8 rout of Newton County Academy. Patton Stanley rushed for 119 yards on 18 carries to pace the Jaguars.
Winston fell to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in 3-A with a 41-13 loss to Heidelberg Academy.
Winston won four straight state championships from 1997-2000, while Wayne captured state titles in 1998 and 1999 and finished second in 2001.
Philadelphia
at Forest
Philadelphia, 2-2, is coming off a 41-31 loss at Taylorsville, while Forest, 3-0-1, held off Southeast Lauderdale for a 22-16 win in last week's action.
The Bearcats are expected to having senior running back Derrick Qualls available for this week after missing the first four games.
Philadelphia spotted Taylorsville a 35-14 lead last week before making matters interesting. Desmond Murray rushed for 156 yards on 24 carries. Jamaal Peebles led the Tornado defense with 10 tackles and a fumble recovery.
Philadelphia and Forest have met 14 times previously with the series, which dates to a 26-7 Tornado win in 1928, knotted at 6-6-2.
Pearl
at Neshoba Central
Now tangling as members of Division 4-4A, the Rockets and Pirates have met only once previously with Neshoba Central spanking Pearl 55-24 for the 1990 Class 4A North State championship.
Neshoba enters the fray with a 1-3 overall mark and an 0-1 4-4A showing after last week's 30-3 beating at Louisville.
The Rockets lost four fumbles and threw an interception against Louisville.
Jason Yarbrough had 14 tackles to lead the Rocket defense.
Pearl improved to 3-1 with a 32-6 victory over Ridgeland last week. The Pirates also own wins over Brandon (12-7) and Mendenhall (49-20) with their lone loss coming to unbeaten Northwest Rankin (24-6).
Choctaw Central
at Morton
With quarterback Shaun Jimmie out with an injury suffered against Cherokee, N.C., the Warriors were non-productive offensively in last week's 28-0 loss to West Lauderdale.
The Warriors had just 90 total yards and three of their four first downs came on their final possession. Five lost fumbles hindered the offensive output.
This week finds the 2-2 Warriors heading to Scott County for their first meeting with a 2-2 Morton squad that's coming off a surprising 17-14 loss to Carthage last week.
Both the Warriors and Panthers are 0-1 in Division 5-3A.
Jimmie is questionable for this week.
Louisville
at Kosciusko
Long-time Choctaw Conference powers Louisville and Kosciusko clash Friday in Attala County.
Louisville whipped Neshoba Central 30-3 last week to improve to 2-2. Ken Coleman led the Wildcats with 188 yards on 20 rushes.
Kosciusko improved to 3-1 by beating Bailey (39-6).
Bayou Academy
at Leake Academy
The Rebels knocked off Carroll Academy 39-6 last week to up their record to 4-1. Quarterback Cory Burns rushed for 169 yards and passed for 49. Stuart Mangrum led the Leake defense with 15 tackles.
Bayou invades Madden for homecoming Friday night with a 2-3 mark after losing 42-19 to Lee Academy last week.
Leake has a 2-0 lead in the series with the Cleveland school.
Heidelberg Academy
at Kemper Academy
After early-season losses to Columbia Academy and Lamar, the Heidelberg Rebels have won three straight games to grab the lead in the Academy 3-A standings.
All three of the league wins have come with relative ease. In last week's win over Winston Academy, Brent Welch rushed 17 times for 126 yards.
Kemper's 2-3 Rams have the unenviable task of trying the slow down the Rebel express this week.
Kemper is coming off a 48-0 loss to Sylva-Bay Academy as the Rams fell to 0-3 in 3-A.
