ELLISVILLE The Jones Junior College Bobcats posted a hard-fought 20-16 victory over the Mississippi Delta Community College Trojans Saturday night in the 59th annual Laurel Lions Bowl at R.H. Watkins Stadium.
For their efforts, the Bobcats made the biggest leap in the latest National Junior College Athletic Association poll, jumping from No. 13 to No. 7 in the poll that was released Tuesday.
Next up for the Bobcats is a trip to north Mississippi today to face the Coahoma Community College Tigers. Kickoff is 7 p.m. in Clarksdale.
JCJC is 2-0, while the Tigers bring an 0-2 record into the contest.
In last week's victory, the Bobcats trailed 10-6 with around seven minutes to play. First, a host of Bobcats blocked a Delta punt and Josh Chapman ran it in 10 yards for a score. Moments later, Voncarie Owens raced 64 yards for a touchdown.
The Trojans got a 42-yard touchdown pass with just less than three minutes to play to pull within four, but Jones took the ensuing kickoff and ran out the clock.
Coahoma enters the game after losses to Southwest (43-6) and Co-Lin (21-7), but Dykes said the Tigers might be the biggest team JCJC will see all year.
Prior to last year, Coahoma had gone 1-28 in the previous three seasons. Third-year coach Freeman Horton's team was 2-7 last year.
Next week, the Bobcats will play their first home game of the season against Co-Lin on Sept. 27 at 7 p.m.
