New leagues in the works

As the fall and winter leagues are getting into gear plans are begin made to several new leagues to the 2003-2004 schedule.
An organizational meeting was held last Thursday for a Smoke Free Seniors league, which is set to get underway this week. This league is open to anyone age 50 and over and will bowl each Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m. During this time, Dixie Bowl Lanes will become a non-smoking facility until approximately 4 p.m. Teams will be comprised of two bowlers, and while one member of each sex is preferred, any combination will be accepted. For those of you who prefer a smoke-free environment, this is a perfect opportunity for you to enjoy the fun and clean air at the same time. Even if you did not make last week's meeting you are still welcome to join us Thursday afternoon for an afternoon of smoke-free fun.
Also in the works are plans for a Sunday afternoon league. Tentative plans call for bowling to begin at 4 p.m. each Sunday for 24 weeks. Teams will consist of three or four players. An organizational meeting is scheduled for Oct. 12 to set the league parameters. Free refreshments will be provided at this meeting. Plans are also begin made for a Restaurant league to bowl Tuesday nights at 6:30 p.m. Anyone who is employed by any restaurant is welcome to take part. The meeting for this league will take place Oct. 14 with startup the following week. Contact Regina Anderson at Dixie Bowl for more information on this league.
Local bowlers continued to punch out some big scores in league action last week. Cindy Rutledge pounded out the high game for the ladies with a 246, earning a 75-pin Over Average award in the process. Lou Timms and Betty Aycock tied for the high series with a 605. Betty also rolled a nice 223 game in her set. Nonie Embrey came through with a 234 and new 600 Club member Rhonda Covington checked in with a 233. Janie Tisdale scattered wood for a 222 while Debbie Jones cranked out a 220.
As for the guys, only four 700 series were bowled during the week, but they were all big ones. After a slow start to the season, Mike Cothern put it into high gear last week and pounded out games of 266, 244 and 279 while on his way to a monster 791 series in the Ball &Chain league. Ken Miller used games of 277 and 266 to crunch a 759 and M.A. Copeland pulled off his fourth 7 with a 756 set in the Wednesday Night Mixed league, including a 279 game. Ron Coleman rounded out the list of big shooters with a "mere" 724. Mel Cacapit blew pins away during a 276 effort in the Monday Nighters league while Bill Fike strung strikes for a 267 in the Queen City league. Also getting in on the act was Johnny Tinsley who found the range for a nice 262. Other guys putting up some big numbers were Jim Broderick, Jr., Robert Brown, Willie Whitted, Andrew Clayton and Jason Pierce.
Several tournaments are on the horizon including the State Mixed Tournament, the Seniors State Tournament and the Peanut tournament in Dothan, Alabama and entry forms for them are available at Dixie Bowl. Stop by the board and check them out over the next several weeks.
