Andrew J. Chesney has been named as a STAR Student for the 2002-2003 school year by the Mississippi Economic Council's M.B. Swayze Educational Foundation, sponsor the STAR program.
STAR stands for "Student-Teacher Achievement Recognition."
The Union High School senior was honored during the 13th annual Education Celebration held April 25 at Mississippi College in Clinton. This prestigious event is co-sponsored by Entergy.
Chesney is the son of Tim and Melanie Chesney of Union. He is an honor student, and has earned the followed awards and memberships: Lott Leadership Institute recipient, National Young Leaders Conference nominee, United States Achievement Academy, National English Award, Honors English III, Math and Science team competition, Who's Who Among American High School Students, Innovative Applications Subject Area Award, Plain Seal, American History Award, Band, Beta Club, Gifted Class, FBLA, UHS Webmaster, Debate and Chess Teams, Scholars Bowl and Mock Trial Competition.
He plans to attend the University of Mississippi and pursue a degree in medicine.
Chesney's STAR Teacher is Sandra Savell Winstead of Union, a math teacher at Union High School. She is a graduate of Mississippi College, where she earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics. She received a master's degree in secondary education from Mississippi State University.
She has been teaching for 19 years and has been named a STAR Teacher five times in 1996, 1997, 2001, 2002 and 2003. She has been a Mississippi State Beta Sponsor for two years.
These Newton County Elementary School students were named to the Principal's List and Honor Roll for the third nine week. Students must earn all "A's" to make the Principal's List. Students who have all "A's" and"B's" earn a spot of the Honor Roll.
